We may only have a few opportunities each month for actors, composers, designers, and women whose work fits in some of the newer categories, but it is important to us to broaden our base, and to build the available opportunities up however we can over time.

September’s Special Opportunity
This month we’ll be working hard to find special opportunities for women in film and television. In the meantime, we’ve decided to feature one of our member organizations to show them our appreciation and to encourage our subscribers to get involved!
New York Women in Film & Television, or NYWIFT, has been supporting women filmmakers in New York for 35 years. A visit to their website, http://www.nywift.org/, is a true celebration of women in film and television. You can stream films, check out their upcoming events which range from free screenings to the swankiest of awards ceremonies, or read up on their spotlighted projects and artists. They are now accepting applications for their Mentor/Intern program, a program designed to connect those in the early stages of their career with seasoned professionals. NYWIFT provides scholarships to women who are second year graduate students in film in universities throughout New York, including NYU, Columbia, City College and SVA. Their resources guide, http://www.nywift.org/resourceGuide.aspx is also an invaluable source of information for any women in the film and television industry. **Brooklyn Girl Festival** (March 26-28, 2015, Brooklyn, NY) – Seeks to empower women and their unique and relevant interpretation of the world around them and strengthen the community of women filmmakers. $1.00 from each submission fee will go to the Reel GRRLS scholarship fund, a non-profit organization based in Seattle, WA that offers high school girls the opportunity to learn filmmaking and make their own movies. Submitted films must have a woman in the role of director, writer, producer, director of photography, or lead animator. Seeking entries in the following categories: Dramatic Feature (over 60 minutes), Comedy Feature (over 60 minutes), Documentary Feature (over 60 minutes), Dramatic Short (under 50 minutes), Comedy Short (under 50 minutes), Documentary Short (under 50 minutes), and Experimental or Animated Short (under 50 minutes; includes music videos). **The Athena Film Festival** (February 5-8, 2015, Barnard, NY) - Now in its fifth year, the Athena Film Festival — a celebration of women and leadership — is an engaging weekend of feature films, documentaries and shorts that highlight women’s leadership in real life and the fictional world. Also, in an attempt to remedy lack of gender parity in film, the Athena Film Festival has created the Athena List, an annual slate of between 3-5 screenplays with female leaders or strong female protagonists that have yet to be made into films. Screenplays can be written by any gender, but must focus on women’s leadership. **LUNAFEST** (Ongoing events nationwide, limited submission window) - Since 2000, LUNAFEST has showcased the work of more than 110 women filmmakers and raised nearly $1.75 million for women’s causes throughout North America. They seek unique stories in short film format created by, for and about women. If your film is chosen by the LUNAFEST Board of Advisors, you get a $2,500 award. If chosen it will also be screened by audiences at more than 190 venues throughout North America and serve as vehicle for raising awareness and funds for causes that women care about. $20 Fee, $15 Student Fee, made out to the Breast Cancer Fund. Film Independent Directors Lab (TBD, Los Angeles, CA) - Designed to help directors who are prepping their feature films, the Directors Lab is an intensive eight-week program running in Los Angeles in February and March. The primary focus of the Lab is on learning to work with actors and the rehearsal process. Under the guidance of the lab instructor, Directors Lab Fellows select short scenes from their scripts to workshop. Additionally, Fellows go through a mini-production, learning how to break down a script into a shot list, collaborate with cinematographers, and construct a scene in the editing process. Film Independent provides the Lab participants with camera and sound packages to shoot their scenes. All scenes will be shot on digital video and critiqued by the Lab Instructor as well as the other Lab participants. A maximum of eight projects are selected. Submit complete feature-length screenplay, logline and synopsis, bios of key cast and crew, project status and history, cover letter explaining your interest in the lab, and prior work sample. Lifetime Unscripted Development Pipeline - Lifetime and the NYTVF have teamed for the third annual Lifetime Unscripted Development Pipeline to challenge YOU to find exceptional, interesting, and entertaining women and worlds that are perfect for TV. If you have an eye for talent and a passion for TV, then submit your 2-4 minute casting/teaser tape for the chance at $10k and the opportunity to produce your show with Lifetime. Awards: * 15 semi-finalists will be reviewed by the network and invited to participate in the 2014 NYTVF in October. * 5 finalists receiving development funding to produce additional tape.

Heinz Endowments’ Small Arts Initiative – Opportunity for nonprofit professional arts organizations in southwestern Pennsylvania with annual budgets under $250,000. Sundance Institute / Alfred P. Sloan Commissioning Grant – Cash award of up to $20,000 for a science or technology related project at an early stage (full treatment or early screenplay draft). Grants includes a small stipend (up to $5,000) for a science advisor to provide consultation and feedback, creative support from a group of advisors, the possibility of a fellowship to a Screenwriters Lab, and support from the Feature Film Program staff. In addition to a commissioning grant, a Fellowship Grant of $10,000, along with the $5,000 science advisor stipend, will also be awarded. Projects must be narrative features that have science or technology as a major theme or scientists as major characters (science fiction projects that stray too far from a base of scientific reality will not be considered). Southern Exposure’s Alternative Exposure – Seeks to fuel the energy of the San Francisco Bay Area visual arts community by providing direct support to projects that contribute to their communities and provide frameworks of support for artists to create and continue their work. Grants of up to $3,500 to support the work of unincorporated groups of artists or individual artists, burgeoning art venues and gathering spaces, publications, collectives, and events, to promote the making and presenting of work in a committed but informal way. Projects can include an exhibition or exhibition series, a public art project, a one-time event or performance, the ongoing work of a venue or collective, the publication of writing directly related to the visual arts, an online project or publication, an artist residency, a series of screenings, and more. For advanced professionals in all fields, including the creative arts (in the field of performing arts, artists must perform their own original material to be eligible), to further the development of scholars and artists by assisting them to engage in research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts, under the freest possible conditions. Grants are to individuals only (but are not available to students) and have been averaging $43,200 for U.S./Canadian fellowships – amounts are adjusted to the needs of the fellows, considering their resources and the purpose and scope of their plans. California Council for the Humanities California Documentary Project - Supports film, radio, and new media projects that document the California experience and explore issues of significance to Californians. Three types of grants available:
Production – Up to $50,000 (film and radio) or $20,000 (new media) to strengthen the humanities content and approach of documentary media productions and help propel projects toward completion. Projects must be in the production stage, have a work-in-progress to submit, and actively involve at least two humanities advisors to help frame and contextualize subject matter at a point early enough to make meaningful contributions to the production.
Research and Development – Up to $10,000 to strengthen the humanities content and approach of documentary media productions in their earliest stages. Projects must actively involve at least three humanities advisors to help frame and contextualize subject matter throughout the research and development phase.
Public Engagement – Up to $10,000, which must be matched by at least a 1:1 amount of cash or in-kind contributions from non-federal sources to support the dissemination and public engagement activities of previously-supported CDP film, radio and new media projects.

Tournées Festival Grants to Bring Contemporary French Cinema to U.S. College Campuses – FACE (French American Cultural Exchange), a non-profit dedicated to supporting contemporary creative work in the context of French-American cultural and educational exchange, is accepting applications for colleges to show French films as part of a festival. Screenings must take place within a one-month period, and should consist of a minimum of 5 films. Films may be presented as part of a larger festival of French or International cinema. Schools that show films in 35mm will receive a grant of $2,300, and those that show films on video will receive $1,800. Grants are paid retroactively upon receipt of post-screening documents and materials. Applicants must be affiliated with an American college or university with non-profit status, and must choose at least five films from the FACE website and plan a tentative schedule for screenings. The American Antiquarian Society (AAS) Fellowship for Creative and Performing Artists and Writers – Visiting fellowship for historical research by creative and performing artists, writers, filmmakers, playwrights, journalists, and others producing imaginative, non-formulaic works dealing with pre-20th century American history. Recipients receive 4-week period of uninterrupted research, reading, and collegial discussion at the AAS, a national research library and learned society of American history and culture, located in Worcester, MA; $1,350/$1,850 stipend (on campus/off campus housing). National Humanities Center Residential Fellowships – Private, nonprofit, North Carolina-based center will provide 40 residential fellowships of up to $60,000 plus travel (including for dependents) for advanced study in the humanities from September 2013-May 2014. Scholars of any age and from any nation encouraged, but must hold doctorate or equivalent and have record of publication. In addition to scholars from all fields of humanities, the NHC accepts individuals, including from the arts, who are engaged in humanistic projects. American Academy in Berlin Fellowships (2014-2015 Academic Year, Berlin, Germany) – Fellowships for emerging and established scholars, writers, and professionals who wish to engage in independent study in Berlin.
